Victor Lai made Canadian badminton history on Sunday by becoming the first Canadian to win a BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament. He secured a commanding 21-19, 21-8 win over Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in the men’s singles final of the POLYTRON Indonesia Open 2026.

Playing in front of a large crowd at Istora Senayan, Lai completed an impressive week by defeating four top-20 players, including world No. 6 Chou Tien Chen in a thrilling three-game semifinal. Throughout the tournament, the Canadian won 10 of 11 games and took home the prestigious title, along with $101,500 US in prize money and 12,000 world ranking points.

“It feels amazing,” Lai said after the match. “Thank you to all the fans. You really helped me through the week. The badminton is the best in the world.”

This victory marks another milestone in a breakthrough year for the world No. 14. Lai has also earned podium finishes at the BWF World Championships and All England Open, alongside titles at the Pan Am Individual Championships and now the Indonesia Open.

“What a tournament for Victor,” said Badminton Canada National Team Head Coach Mike Butler. “He had several decisive wins against top players in the world and capped it off against one of Indonesia’s finest. The future is bright for a now top-10 Canadian player.”

Canadian fans will get their first opportunity to see Lai compete at home when he headlines the YONEX Canada Open from June 30 to July 5 at the Markham Pan Am Centre in Markham, Ontario.
