Brianne Jenner, captain of the Ottawa Charge and a free agent, has signed a three-year contract with the expansion PWHL team in Hamilton. The announcement was made by Hamilton on Friday, marking the expansion team’s first player acquisition.
In a social media message, Jenner revealed she had hoped to finish her professional hockey career in Ottawa, but the Charge chose a different direction. “To the teammates, friends, and neighbours that became family during my time in Ottawa, thank you,” she wrote.
The 35-year-old Oakville native highlighted her family’s ties to the Golden Horseshoe region and promised to give her all to the new team every day.
Ottawa Charge General Manager Mike Hirshfeld expressed his best wishes for Jenner and her family. He described the four-time Olympian as a “pillar of our organization” over the past three seasons. Hirshfeld added, “Brianne was pivotal in setting the foundation of the culture of a new franchise in Ottawa. She made an impact in our dressing room with exceptional sportsmanship, leadership skills and work ethic.”
Jenner holds the record as Ottawa’s all-time scoring leader with 28 goals and 33 assists in 82 games. Last season, she ranked fourth in league scoring with 12 goals and 14 assists in 30 games and was nominated for forward of the year.
A four-time Olympian, Jenner earned gold medals in 2014 and 2022, and silver medals in 2018 and 2026.
Jenner was widely considered one of the foundational players of the Ottawa Charge when the PWHL began three years ago, and she has served as the team’s captain since then. She was instrumental in leading the team to the Walter Cup final last month, where Ottawa fell to the Montréal Victoire in a best-of-five series.
The PWHL recently announced expansion into Hamilton, Las Vegas, Detroit, and San Jose, bringing the league’s total to 12 teams.
During the first phase of the expansion roster distribution, the Ottawa Charge protected only three players: Gwyneth Philips, Ronja Savolainen, and Rebecca Leslie. As a free agent, Jenner was not protected in the expansion draft.
