The Carolina Hurricanes took control of the Eastern Conference final with a dominant 4-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday, seizing a 3-1 series lead. Sebastian Aho ignited a three-goal burst late in the first period, and goaltender Frederik Andersen secured his third playoff shutout by stopping 18 shots.
Jordan Staal, Logan Stankoven, and Andrei Svechnikov, who scored into an empty net, also found the back of the net for Carolina. Nikolaj Ehlers and Shayne Gostisbehere each recorded two assists, helping the Hurricanes become just the seventh NHL team to win six or more road playoff games to start a postseason.
Montreal’s Jakub Dobes made 39 saves but was unable to keep the Canadiens in the game. The series now heads back to Raleigh’s Lenovo Center for Game 5 on Friday, with Game 6 scheduled for Sunday at the Bell Centre if necessary.
Montreal had captured the series opener 6-2 on the road, but Carolina answered with back-to-back 3-2 overtime wins to lead 2-1 heading into Wednesday. This outing, however, was never close.
Aho broke the deadlock at 14:59 of the physical first period with a power-play one-timer off a pass from Ehlers. Staal extended the lead to 2-0 less than two minutes later, positioning himself in front of Dobes to tap home a feed from K’Andre Miller.
After a key block from Gostisbehere stopped a Montreal chance, the Hurricanes countered swiftly. Jackson Blake set up Stankoven to score Carolina’s third goal in just under three minutes.
Dobes, celebrating his 25th birthday, faced early pressure from a Blake breakaway and a one-time shot from Taylor Hall. The Canadiens struggled to generate offense but created some momentum with a man advantage in the second period, where Ivan Demidov found a couple of chances against Andersen.
Still, Montreal’s efforts unraveled with five minutes remaining in the first. Coach Martin St. Louis shuffled his forward lines to try to spark the offense in the second period, but the Canadiens continued to struggle. Cole Caufield had a breakaway opportunity, while Svechnikov rang a puck off the crossbar at the other end.
Montreal weathered a two-man advantage later in the period with solid defense. Eric Robinson missed a chance to make it 4-0 after penalties expired, firing wide on an open net. Andersen blocked a decent shot from Anderson as Montreal pressed late.
The Bell Centre crowd tried to rally behind the Canadiens in the third, but Carolina maintained their suffocating play, mirroring their relentless performances earlier in the series. With this win, the Hurricanes put Montreal on the brink of elimination as the series shifts back to Raleigh.
