The NHL has sanctioned the Vegas Golden Knights by stripping them of a second-round pick in this year’s draft and fining head coach John Tortorella $100,000 US for breaching media access rules after their series-clinching Game 6 win in Anaheim on Thursday night.
Tortorella declined to speak with reporters following Vegas’ 5-1 victory over the Ducks, which secured their spot in the Western Conference final against Colorado.
Additionally, the Golden Knights failed to open their dressing room in line with league and Players’ Association agreements.
The league issued a statement explaining that the penalties came after the Golden Knights had received previous warnings regarding media access.
The team has the option to appeal the decision in person to commissioner Gary Bettman’s office in New York next week.
In response to the NHL’s announcement, the Golden Knights said in a statement on social media, “The Golden Knights are aware of today’s announcement from the NHL regarding the post-game media availability following Game 6 in Anaheim. The organization will have no further comment.”
