Gerry Meehan, former winger and general manager for the Buffalo Sabres, has died at the age of 79. The Sabres confirmed Meehan’s passing on their website and social media Saturday.

A Toronto native, Meehan was part of the Sabres’ inaugural team in 1970 and recorded the franchise’s first assist. He was also the team’s second captain and played 10 seasons in the NHL with Buffalo, Vancouver, Atlanta, and Washington.

Meehan served as the Sabres’ general manager from 1986 to 1993. During his tenure, he and director of player development Don Luce played a key role in helping Alexander Mogilny become the first Soviet Union player to defect to North America. This breakthrough paved the way for other Soviet players to join the NHL.

Meehan is survived by his wife, three children, and four grandchildren.
