Nyara Sabally scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Toronto Tempo to a 111-104 victory over the Chicago Sky on Wednesday night in Chicago. Marina Mabrey contributed 24 points and seven assists as the Tempo improved to 4-4 in their inaugural season.
Toronto’s lead was cut to 98-96 with 3:33 left in the fourth quarter, but the Tempo responded with an 8-2 run to secure control of the game. Mabrey hit a step-back jumper to put Toronto up 101-96, and Sabally added a three-pointer to extend the lead to eight points with 1:43 remaining.
Sabally was highly efficient, making 11 of 14 shots from the floor. Mabrey also shot well, hitting 9 of 13 attempts, helping Toronto shoot 56 percent overall. Sabally, Mabrey, and Maria Conde each knocked down three of the team’s twelve three-pointers.
Brittney Sykes added 20 points for Toronto, while rookie Kiki Rice recorded 14 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Conde chipped in 12 points off the bench.
For Chicago, rookie Sydney Taylor scored a season-high 27 points. Skylar Diggins finished with 23 points and nine assists, while Natasha Cloud added 18 points and nine assists.
Toronto built a 55-48 halftime lead, fueled by Sabally’s 14 first-half points, Sykes’ 13, and Mabrey’s 10. The Tempo shot 58 percent in the opening half and outrebounded Chicago 21-10. Toronto then started the third quarter on an 11-4 run to push the lead to 66-52.
Next up, Toronto will host Seattle on Saturday. Chicago wraps up its four-game homestand on Friday against Minnesota.
