The NBA has imposed lifetime bans on two individuals following an incident during Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Finals. One of the banned fans was arrested after running onto the court and seemingly taking a selfie with San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama.<\/p>\n
This occurred midway through the fourth quarter of the Spurs’ game against the New York Knicks on Wednesday. While the NBA did not reveal the exact role of the second banned person, they confirmed that this individual did not enter the court but was involved in the event.<\/p>\n
An NBA spokesperson told The Associated Press that “the individual who entered the court area during Game 1 of The Finals was arrested and will be banned for life from all NBA arenas. A second individual will also receive a lifetime ban for his role in the incident.”<\/p>\n
According to a source who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity, the fan who ran onto the court is a juvenile, a detail initially reported by the San Antonio Express-News.<\/p>\n
The fan entered the court from the sideline, running into San Antonio\u2019s offensive end but was swiftly removed by two security guards. There appeared to be no physical contact with Wembanyama or any Knicks players.<\/p>\n
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed disapproval, saying, “I even hesitate to describe that person as a fan. They seemed to have some ulterior motive for doing so.”<\/p>\n
Wembanyama remained unfazed by the intrusion, commenting, “I’ve never been in that situation. I didn’t know how to act.” He likened the moment to a January 2024 game interruption when a bat flew around the Spurs’ arena, briefly stopping play.<\/p>\n
The game was paused for one minute and 29 seconds before resuming with a jump ball. The juvenile fan was escorted out through a baseline tunnel.<\/p>\n
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson downplayed the incident, stating, “I don’t think it was an event at all. I thought security got him out of there. I think everybody moved on to the next play.”<\/p>\n
Silver praised the officiating crew, led by Scott Foster, for their quick response, minimizing disruption to the game.<\/p>\n
The commissioner reflected on the broader context, saying, “It’s unfortunately part of all sports. There’s a lot more security, much more apparatus in place than we needed maybe in the old days. I think the other side of the coin of global attention is that somebody realizes that there’s this enormous platform to do stupid things. So, we learn from every incident.”<\/p>\n
Separately, the league is investigating another fan-related episode from the closing minutes of Game 1, where New York guard Jalen Brunson appeared upset by remarks from a courtside spectator. Brunson, who scored a game-high 30 points in the Knicks’ comeback victory, declined to comment on the incident.<\/p>\n
Knicks forward Josh Hart said, “To be honest, I didn’t even see what happened. I heard something about it. I didn’t really see it. I don’t know. He’s always pretty calm, pretty composed. I’m sure the fans probably said something crazy to kind of get him going.”<\/p>\n
The NBA has recently emphasized fan conduct and issued a memo to all teams at the start of the season stressing consistent enforcement of the NBA Fan Code of Conduct to address misconduct.<\/p>\n
The league instructed teams that arena staff “must be trained to identify behavior that violates NBA rules and to respond proactively.” Additionally, a fan conduct video is shown before every game in all arenas.<\/p>\n
