Jannik Sinner defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (5), 6-3 on Sunday to capture the Monte-Carlo Masters title for the first time and reclaim the ATP No. 1 ranking from his biggest rival.
“This result is amazing,” Sinner said. “Getting back to No. 1 means a lot for me.”
The victory marked the ninth final meeting between Sinner and Alcaraz, a rivalry often dubbed “Sincaraz.” Four-time Grand Slam champion Sinner, 24, narrowed Alcaraz’s head-to-head lead to 10-7 with his 27th career title, and notably, his first Masters title on clay. He will officially return to the No. 1 ranking on Monday.
Facing challenging windy conditions at the Monte Carlo Country Club, Sinner rallied from 3-1 down in the second set to serve out the match. He clinched victory on his first match point when Alcaraz sent a forehand long.
“It was a bit windy, a bit breezy—different conditions than the tournament has brought before,” Sinner said. “I am very happy to win a big title on this surface. I haven’t done it before and it means a lot to me.”
Alcaraz entered the final on a 17-match winning streak on clay but struggled with 45 unforced errors in the match. Despite the loss, he praised Sinner’s achievement.
“It is impressive what you are achieving right now,” Alcaraz said. “Congratulations for everything.”
After Alcaraz’s final shot went wide, Sinner dropped to his knees before jogging to celebrate with his team.
“I felt a bit tired, so I tried to keep the right mentality,” Sinner said. “Having this trophy means a lot to me.”
This win represented Sinner’s third title of the year after straight-set victories at Indian Wells and Miami. He became only the fourth man to reach the finals of the first three Masters tournaments of the season and joined Novak Djokovic as the only players to win all three.
Alcaraz has two titles this year, including the Australian Open, where he became the youngest man to win all four Grand Slam events. He also staged a remarkable comeback to beat Sinner in last year’s French Open final, lost to him at Wimbledon, and bested him again at the U.S. Open.
