Marie-Philip Poulin, a Canadian hockey legend and three-time Olympic gold medallist, has added an honorary doctorate in civil law from Bishop’s University to her growing list of accomplishments.
Fresh from leading the Montreal Victoire to victory in the PWHL Walter Cup by defeating the Ottawa Charge in four games, Poulin received the honorary degree during Bishop’s University convocation ceremony on Saturday afternoon.
The university held two ceremonies that day, with Poulin honored in the 2:30 p.m. event. Bishop’s principal and vice-chancellor, Sébastien Lebel-Grenier, praised her, saying, “Marie-Philip Poulin embodies values that are deeply aligned with the Bishop’s experience: excellence, leadership, humility, and a deep commitment to community.”
He added, “She has defined an era of her sport with integrity and an unwavering dedication to her teammates and her community.”
Speaking to CBC’s All in a Weekend host Sonali Karnick earlier that day, Poulin reflected on the significance of the honor.
After stepping onto the stage to accept her degree, Poulin expressed her gratitude and offered words of encouragement to the graduating class, earning a standing ovation.
“Receiving an honorary doctorate is something I never imagined when I was a kid in Beauceville with a hockey stick in my hand and a dream in my head,” she shared.
She credited hockey for teaching her discipline and competitiveness but emphasized that, above all, it taught her the importance of being a great teammate.
Following the ceremony, Poulin met with the Bishop’s Gaiters women’s hockey team, who won the U Sports national championship in 2025. The team presented her with a jersey as a token of admiration.
Poulin urged the graduates to “chase excellence, work hard [and] dream big,” while reminding them that character matters most.
“Success matters. Achievement matters. But the way you treat people along the way matters way more,” she said.
